Empowering Amazon Communities: Entrepreneurship for Conservation and Long-Term Sustainability.

Deep in the Rio Negro Basin in Brazil, where access is limited to riverways and the Amazon’s breathtaking biodiversity spans over 7 million hectares, lies a unique challenge: how to empower riverside communities to create sustainable livelihoods that protect this irreplaceable ecosystem?

Since 2021, IPÊ – Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas, a Brazilian organization, has been addressing this challenge by fostering local socio-environmental entrepreneurship. Through their efforts, initiatives like Yara Amazonas Products have achieved remarkable growth, with revenues increasing by over 200% in just one year. Communities in the Puranga Conquista Sustainable Development Reserve (SDR) are building sustainable businesses and strengthening their connection to the environment.

The project provides tailored support to entrepreneurs in the region, focusing on improving financial management, fostering income stability, and promoting sustainable practices. To carry out the project, IPÊ has the “Maíra I,” a boat that is essential for reaching the riverside communities, as the region is only accessible by river. Through training sessions and mentorships, many local businesses have grown significantly:

• Yara Amazonas Products: Revenue increased by over 200% (2023–2024).
• Puxadão dos Amigos: Revenue doubled.
• Surusawa Muraki Artisan Group: Revenue grew by more than 40%.

By equipping communities with tools to succeed, IPÊ is not only helping protect the Amazon but also proving that conservation and economic development can thrive together. These stories of transformation showcase the power of local solutions to address global challenges.
