Confronting Mexico’s Dual Crisis: Childhood Obesity and Malnutrition

In Mexico, the rates of childhood obesity and malnutrition are reaching critical levels. With over 35% of children grappling with obesity and 22.6% suffering from malnutrition, the need for decisive action has never been more urgent.
The Alimentando Sonrisas project, spearheaded by Fundación de Beneficencia Privada Banco de Alimentos Cáritas Puebla and supported by Avery Dennison Foundation, is tackling these twin crises head-on. Focused on children aged 3-12 in Puebla—a region severely impacted by social and economic challenges—the project aims to improve nutritional health through a comprehensive approach.
The initiative involves initial assessments, educational sessions, and bi-weekly nutritional supplementation over six months. These efforts are not just about combating malnutrition; they are about instilling healthy habits that can last a lifetime. By the end of the project, 71.2% of the children showed normal growth, with cases of malnutrition reduced to 3.5% and obesity rates dropping by 6%. Anemia rates also saw a significant decline, falling from 9% to 4%.
But the impact of Alimentando Sonrisas goes beyond physical health. The project has led to notable behavioral changes, with children increasing their consumption of fruits and vegetables while cutting back on processed snacks. Families involved in the project have reported a stronger sense of community and belonging, thanks to the workshops that emphasize sustainable, locally-sourced food preparation.
Ultimately, the Alimentando Sonrisas project is not just about addressing immediate nutritional needs—it’s about empowering families with the knowledge and skills to sustain these improvements long into the future. Through this initiative, Fundación de Beneficencia Privada Banco de Alimentos Cáritas Puebla and Avery Dennison Foundation are making a lasting difference in the lives of children and their communities.
