Bay Islands International School (BIIS)

The Bay Islands International School (BIIS) was established as a not-for-profit in 2017 to provide a high-quality alternative to the public schools on the island of Roatan, Honduras, in order to educate and empower children and break the cycle of poverty. BIIS offers pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade and is certified by the Honduran Ministry of Education.

Our mission at BIIS is to develop and maintain an environment where children are empowered and enabled to discover better ways of thinking and decision making. We accomplish by putting the student at the center of our program, incorporating character development and critical thinking skills into the delivery of academics, and in all ways approaching the execution of our mission with loving kindness, bringing out the best in each child at all times.

External funding is ESSENTIAL to support the tuition of a significant portion of our students. In addition, the most pressing large-scale project is the development of a long-term home for the school. The school has never operated in a dedicated building but has rented various facilities over its history. Currently, the school is housed in a reconfigured resort hotel. This situation is untenable as a long-term solution, particularly given that the school has experienced roughly 50% growth in enrollment year-over-year for the past several academic years. The current plan is to purchase land and build appropriate school and administrative buildings as funds permit. Other concurrent expenses would accompany a new facility, such as security and maintenance personnel, furnishings, an athletic field, etc.
