ABPD

Over half of Guatemalans live in poverty, with rural Indigenous communities facing the highest rates of chronic childhood malnutrition, affecting 50-90% of children. This leads to physical stunting and cognitive impairments that limit their potential.

Asociación Bienestar, Progreso y Desarrollo (ABPD) works with rural Maya communities to combat malnutrition through a community-driven, sustainable model. By focusing on health, nutrition, and capacity-building, this approach empowers local communities to address their own challenges long-term.

Core Objectives:

  • Empower Women: Involve women in decision-making on nutrition, infrastructure, and food production.
  • Youth Leadership: Equip young people to lead community transformation.
  • Inclusive Engagement: Promote gender equity by engaging men and local authorities.
  • Clean Water: Build water systems and safe waste management solutions.
  • Safer Cookstoves: Reduce indoor air pollution through efficient, low-emission stoves.
  • Improved Sanitation: Install latrines and educate on hygiene practices.
  • Child Nutrition: Focus on nutrition during the critical first 1,000 days of life.
  • Food Security: Support home gardens and small-scale livestock for better nutrition.
  • Family Planning: Provide access to family planning resources.
