Sparking Opportunity with Online Learning and Communities of Practice

Every day, well intentioned civil society leaders and their staff go to work with the goal of helping people gain access to a better life. The nonprofit landscape is a continuum- there are high evolved organizations with well trained staff and leaders on one side, ranging to tiny, fledgling nonprofits at the other. However these organizations fit into the continuum, common needs connect everyone- the need to develop effective organizational health best practices, fundraise, train leadership, effective M& E reporting, etc. One of our roles here The Resource Foundation (TRF) is help build capacity and share best practice knowledge to our over 400 civil sector implementation partners. The Phi U partnership is an exciting venture that will help us bridge the gap in the continuum, and help accelerate the growth and health of our partners. TRF works primarily as an advisor and grant making organization, often developing partnerships helping corporations and foundations select the best civil society implementations partners to invest in. Additionally, our work includes thorough due diligence and extensive reporting back to donors, all done in native language to ensure the most accurate communication. The consultative aspect of our work enables us to share best practices, capacity building, facilitating communities of practice, etc., for over 400 nonprofit orgs in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as offering services to multinational organizations that require accurate data and coaching for their grant making in the region.

As a nonprofit, we are always looking for innovative, cost saving ways to accelerate the health and capacity of our partners. TRF has recently partnered with Philanthropy University (accredited through the University of Berkley) and are looking forward to facilitating the on-boarding of many of our local partners so they can access the training offered by Phi U. We believe that locally led/managed organizations, utilizing locally created solutions to challenges, is the best path to long term sustainable development. Building capacity within our 400 + partners network, allows us to impact over 3,000,000 people each year in LATAM and the Caribbean. Providing access to the high quality, free training developed by Phi U can help us achieve our goal of under-girding these organizations in the areas of organizational health, capacity building, fundraising, M&E, etc. TRF supports hundreds of programs, and actively collects data on the practical application of the SDGs. Every program is tracked to that regard so that we can begin to quantify the impact our funding partners are making thru their efforts. At the core of everything we do, is woven the fabric of sustainable development. Whether it be helping local partners achieve organizational health, gaining access to funding and support by corporate and other funders, or becoming more efficient, our mission is to Spark Opportunity and help move the needle wherever possible.

One of our signature programs involves building communities of practice around high impact subject areas. For the last several years, we’ve partnered with Johnson and Johnson, (as well as other forward thinking corporate partners,) implementing a women and girls’ health program in 5 countries. Harnessing technology, we offer varying forms of training to thousands of participants, and manage the community of practice thru our proprietary portal. This allows our Regional Programs SME (Christina Mallace) to introduce new information, stimulate thinking, and most importantly, build bridges between local NGOs so they can formulate and share their own locally relevant best practices. This framework results in proven success, and creates a sustainable environment, where the program and learnings live on, long after we officially tender guidance and facilitation.
