Fundación para la Aplicación y Enseñanza de las Ciencias (FUNDAEC)

For more than four decades, Fundación para la Aplicación y Enseñanza de las Ciencias (FUNDAEC), in Colombia, has systematically explored an approach to social and economic development that builds the capacity of youth to become agents of positive social change and true protagonists of their own development.

Fruit of learning processes, action and research, FUNDAEC has developed specific programs dedicated to the betterment of community life and to the development of job skills among youth. One such program is the Sistema de Aprendizaje Tutorial (SAT), which has been formally recognized by the Colombian government as one of the educational options for youth at the secondary level.  SAT has reached over 100,000 youth in Colombia and has spread to several other countries in Latin America.

The initiatives that FUNDAEC has developed allow young people to develop the skills they need to become “Promoters of Community Well-Being.” Youth participants are initiating activities aimed at improving the health of the ecosystems in their region, conducting action-research with the objective of increasing sustainable agriculture production and fostering the education of pre-school aged children. Upon completing FUNDAEC’s programs, participants develop a strong sense of purpose to take charge of their own intellectual and material growth and to contribute to the transformation of society.  Furthermore, youth participating in FUNDAEC’s more advanced programs develop the capacities they need to specialize in a trade or profession through which they can promote the well-being of their families and communities.
