Centro Lyra

Centro Lyra is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2009 with the mission of contributing to sustainable human development and promoting the generation and dissemination of knowledge.

Centro Lyra coordinates and manages the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards Program, which seeks to identify and empower low-income microentrepreneurs who have exhibited strong business skills and have sought creative, effective solutions to overcome poverty. The winners receive a grant to launch or strengthen their business initiative, which sets an example for others in similar situations and encourages potential entrepreneurs to start their own businesses. Also in support of microentrepreneurs, Centro Lyra conducts a training program to help low-income bakers, pastry chefs and confectioners improve their production, quality and sales.

In addition, Centro Lyra is collaborating with the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) to develop a qualitative and quantitative study examining the missing variables in poverty measurement. Centro Lyra is also implementing a program geared toward fostering harmonious communities in low-income areas through involving entrepreneurial youth and women in the creation of a shared vision and a stronger understanding of their social reality and priorities. In this way, the program is fostering the creation of partnerships and actions to develop spaces for collaboration and dialogue. Finally, Centro Lyra has supported the publication of diverse books on human development and community coexistence and development, and it is affiliated with Ashoka and AVINA.
